OVERVIEW

Best Summer Window

The Green Butt Skunk is a great summer steelhead fly from late June through September, with July and August being the prime months.

Month-by-Month

June: A good choice, especially later in the month as summer fish start showing up. If the fish are fresh and aggressive, brighter flies in pink, orange, or chartreuse may still get the first look.

July: Probably the best overall month for the Green Butt Skunk. The green butt adds just enough brightness, while the darker body and wing keep the fly classic, subtle, and easy to fish with confidence.

August: Still an excellent choice, especially early and late in the day. If the water is low, clear, or warm, consider fishing a smaller version.

September: Still worth keeping in the box, especially in the morning and evening. As the season shifts, darker purple, black, muddler-style flies, and other fall-leaning patterns may start to take over depending on the river.

Best Conditions

The Green Butt Skunk shines in classic summer steelhead water:

  • Morning and evening shade
  • Clear to slightly green water
  • Floating lines or light sink-tips
  • Traditional wet-fly swing runs
  • Rivers like the Deschutes, Klickitat, Sandy, and Clackamas
